First day covers: what makes them collectible

A first day cover captures a new stamp on the day it was issued. Here is what to look for, and how to look after them.

A first day cover (FDC) is an envelope bearing a newly issued stamp, cancelled on the stamp's first day of issue. For many collectors it is the most attractive way to record a new issue.

What you will find on a cover

  • The stamp or stamps, often the complete set.
  • A first day cancellation — a postmark dated the day of issue. Many issues have a special pictorial cancellation designed for the occasion.
  • A cachet — a printed design or text on the envelope related to the stamp's subject.

Official and private covers

India Post produces an official first day cover for each new commemorative issue, together with an information sheet about the stamp. These are sold through philatelic bureaus and counters. Clubs, societies and individuals also prepare their own covers with private cachets; well-designed private covers from a local club can become sought-after pieces of local postal history.

What makes one cover better than another

  • Condition matters most: clean envelopes without creases, stains or tears.
  • A clear, well-struck cancellation that does not smudge the design.
  • Unaddressed or neatly addressed covers are generally preferred to heavily handwritten ones.
  • Scarcity: covers from small places, unusual cancellations or limited private printings are harder to find.

Storing your covers

  • Keep them in cover albums or archival sleeves made of inert, acid-free materials.
  • Store them upright in a cool, dry place — away from sunlight and humidity.
  • Never use rubber bands, paper clips or sticky tape on covers.

Getting started

Choose a theme you enjoy — birds, personalities, railways, or the issues of a single year — and build steadily. Writing a short note about each cover's issue turns a box of envelopes into a collection with a story.
