Choosing a theme for a thematic collection

GPC Editorial Team1 min readBeginnerSample

Thematic collecting lets you build a collection around anything you love. A good theme, chosen well, can grow from a stockbook into an exhibit.

Thematic (or topical) collecting means building a collection around a subject rather than a country. Birds, cricket, space, Mahatma Gandhi, textiles, the railways of India — almost anything has appeared on stamps.

Start with something you genuinely enjoy

You will spend many hours looking for material, so pick a subject you already love. Your knowledge of the subject is an advantage: you will spot details that other collectors miss.

Make it the right size

  • Too broad ("animals") and you will never finish, and the collection loses focus.
  • Too narrow and you will run out of material.
  • A useful test: can you think of at least five or six chapters? For example, Birds of India might cover national birds, water birds, birds of prey, endangered species and birds in art.

Tell a story

A thematic collection is strongest when it reads like a story, with each page developing the next part. Before you mount anything, write a simple plan: a title, chapters and sub-chapters. This plan is also what judges look for if you later exhibit, since thematic exhibits are assessed largely on how well they develop the theme.

Use more than stamps

The best thematic collections combine different kinds of philatelic material:

  • stamps and miniature sheets;
  • postmarks and special cancellations;
  • postal stationery and picture postcards;
  • covers that travelled through the post.

Write as you go

Add short, accurate notes that connect each item to your story. Good write-ups are concise, explain why each item belongs, and are checked for facts.

Next steps

Bring your plan to a club meeting. Fellow members can suggest material, sources and ways to develop the story — and your collection may become a future virtual exhibit on this website.

Learn with fellow collectors
